Welcome to yet another instalment of Truth Be Told, a unique endeavour by os.me to bring to you inspirational stories of people who make this world a better place with their compassion, hard work, kindness, talent, and honesty.

We go deep and wide to bring motivational stories of kindness from the unlikeliest of places. And this time, we tap into the political scape of one of the biggest democracies in the world. We caught up with Nupur Sharma, the national spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party — the current ruling political party of India — for a tête-à-tête. She talks about her journey, the kindness of other politicians that helped her grow, and her connection with Thakurji or Lord Krishna.

09:00 to 15:24 – You talked about Lord Krisha, would you please share more about your faith and devotion to Lord Krishna?

Politics is often perceived as an unforgiving space. It is not considered a conventional career pick. Yet, Nupur, who has no family in the game, decided to make a foray into politics. She is carving out a successful political career with her hard work and dedication to satiate her “passion to serve people.”

“See, politics is not a salaried job, so we have to recognize that many of us are in it because of our passion to make a difference in people’s lives,” she says.

But isn’t it a tough career choice considering it is a dog-eat-dog world? How does one decide to become a politician? In a field that’s seen as toxic and unkind, how does someone without any family connections survive it? What are the challenges? We have all had these questions. So, when we had Nupur with us, we decided to get some answers. How did she choose politics?

Truth be told, it is only later that Nupur pursued politics. It all began when the political scene pursued Nupur, a decade ago. It was the summer of 2008, Nupur was studying LLB at The Law Center, Delhi University. The campus was gearing up for one of the most prestigious students’ union elections of the country — Delhi University Students’ Union or DUSU. This election is considered a launchpad for aspirational politicians. Many popular politicians have risen from DUSU polls, including Arun Jaitley, Ajay Makan, Vijay Goel, et al.

In 2008, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, aka ABVP, the student wing of RSS (parent organization of BJP) offered Nupur a ticket to contest for the president’s post in DUSU elections.

Nupur won the election and became a representative of thousands of students of Delhi University — a task she carried out with sincerity. The leaders of BJP noticed her dedication, hard work, and passion to serve people. She earned herself a chance to join national politics. However, she wasn’t sure yet. So, she decided to pursue LLM from the London School of Economics instead.

Upon return, she started practising law. Once again, she got an opportunity to work with BJP. This time she took it up. Nupur helped the party reach the young and sundry. The party recognized her work and gave her various posts in the party.

In 2015, she was also given a ticket to contest her first assembly elections. She got a ticket to fight for the high-profile New Delhi seat against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. She lost the election but won over people with her ability to connect with the masses.

Today, she is the national spokesperson of Bhartiya Janta Party, one of the youngest persons to hold that post. Still, in her 30s, she has already made a mark as a sharp spokesperson and a popular face on the prime-time TV debates.

In a quick chat with os.me, she says that inhabiting the political scape has made her realize that there are enough people who support each other, as opposed to the perception that everyone is out to sabotage the other. In fact, she says, when people work for a cause and belong to a party, they are like family, trying to help each other. There is ample kindness in politics, she says.

She offers her own journey as an example to prove her point.“I have no contacts or family in the field, but if I can do it and if I have been given a chance to do it, it’s only because of the support and kindness of my party leaders,” she says, adding, “Not many would know, Amit Bhai (Home minister Amit Shah) is very compassionate towards party workers.”

But one can’t evade the fact that it is a very taxing field. So how does she go from being mind full to mindful? “Thakurji,” she Nupur, as she reveals how she developed this unwavering faith in Thakurji.
