प्रतिशोध और प्रतिरोध

महाभारत प्रतिरोध की कथा है या प्रतिशोध की?
हर पात्र का महाभारत के युद्ध से जुड़ने का अलग ही कारण था I दुर्योधन, कर्ण, शिखंडी, द्रौपदी, भीम प्रतिशोध के लिए लड़ रहे थे l
कृष्ण, अर्जुन, धर्मराज ये सब प्रतिरोध में थे l प्रतिरोध में व्यक्ति मति सम्मत बात करता है l प्रतिशोध की भावना सुमति का ह्रास होने पर ही उदित होती है l
कभी कभी ना प्रतिरोध होता है और ना ही प्रतिशोध, फिर भी हम जीवन में युद्ध में खींचे जाते है l भीष्म, द्रोण ये सब ना प्रतिरोध में थे ना प्रतिशोध में – ऐसे में युद्ध में लड़ने का क्या औचित्य था? ऐसे युद्ध में यथा सम्भव ना पड़ना ही अच्छा है l

प्रतिशोध में मेरे जीवन में तुम हो और तुमसे मुझे परेशानी है l प्रतिरोध में एक स्थिति है और वो स्थिति ठीक नहीं है इसलिए मेरा यत्न है कि वो स्थिति ठीक हो जाए. तुमसे मुझे कोई आपत्ति नहीं है l तुम यदि स्थिति ठीक करते हो, तो हम एक साथ शांति से रह सकते है l इसलिए लिए सब कुछ होने के बाद भी माधव 5 गाँव का प्रस्ताव लेकर गए और दुर्योधन से वो भी ना माना गया l

ईश्वर कभी प्रतिशोध में अवतार नहीं लेते , वह अपने अवतार केवल प्रतिरोध के लिए लेते है l इसीलिए शायद केशव ने भी महाभारत के युद्ध में शस्त्र नहीं उठाया l प्रतिरोध करने के लिए शस्त्र नहीं संकल्प चाहिये जब तक स्थिति निर्णायक तरह से विश्व के अनुकूल ना हो जाए l प्रतिशोध में संकल्प हो ना हो, शस्त्र अवश्य चाहिए, चाहे फिर वो मानसिक शस्त्र हो या ब्रह्मास्त्र l

प्रायः ऐसा होता है कि प्रतिशोध वाले पक्ष को प्रतिरोध नहीं समझ आता l जो प्रतिशोध की अग्नि में जल रहा होता है वो प्रतिरोध को भी अपने अहम पर लेकर और अधिक प्रतिशोध भावना में आ जाता है l

जो स्वयं में स्थित नहीं है, वो ज़न अधिकतर प्रतिशोध में होते है, दूसरों से और स्वयं से भी .. ये जीवन का नाश करने की शक्ति है l

जो स्वयं में स्थित है, वो जन स्थिति के प्रति ही प्रतिरोध करते है.. क्यूंकि जो सत्य ना हो उसका साथ नहीं देना है l
प्रतिरोध तो जीवन जीने की क्षमता हैl

अपने जीवन में युद्ध को सोच समझ के आमंत्रण दे, प्रतिरोध में विजय है, क्यूंकि वो अधिकतर सत्य में स्थापित होता है l प्रतिशोध में पीड़ा और हार निश्चित है क्योंकि वो असत्य में ही पनपता है l

Is the Mahabharata a story of resistance or of retaliation (revenge/ vengeance)?

Each character had a different reason to join the Mahabharata war. Duryodhana, Karna, Shikhandi, Draupadi, Bhima were fighting for retaliation/ personal vengeance.

Krishna, Arjuna, Dharamraj, all of them were in resistance to the happenings around them. In resistance, a person acts as per the larger good and harmony. Resistance is hall marked by discretion of what is rightful, vengeance is hall marked mostly by harmful personal agenda.  The feeling of revenge arises only when there is too much of ego thus personal unrest leading to a decline of harmony in one’s life .

Sometimes there is neither resistance nor retaliation, yet we are drawn into the battle of life. Bhishma, Drona were neither in resistance nor in retaliation – so what was the point of participating in the war, at all? As much as possible, it is better not to get involved in such a motiveless war.

In retaliation, you are in my life and I am troubled with you, by hook or crook I want to get rid of you. In resistance, there is a situation and that situation is not right, so I try to make that situation right. I have no objection to you. If you fix the situation, we can live together in peace. That’s why even after everything, Madhav took the proposal of pandavas being given 5 villages in exchange for a peaceful resolution to the looming war and that too was not accepted by Duryodhana.

God never incarnates for revenge, He incarnates only in resistance of a situation. Perhaps that is why Keshava did not take up arms in the war of Mahabharata. Resistance requires a peaceful mind equipped with weapons of determination, persistence to mend the situation (no real weapons may be needed), till the situation is decisively favorable to the world. There is no personal agenda of gain in the above.
There can never be a peaceful mind behind retaliation, in fact it is a mind ridden with so much of mental angst of the personal agenda of gain, that a weapon is needed for sure to release the angst, whether a mental weapon or a real one.
It often happens that the one inspired by revenge does not understand the situational resistance by the other. The one who is burning in the fire of vengeance takes the resistance offered as a blow to his fragile ego and becomes more vengeful.

One who is not centered in the self, he is mostly in revenge, with others as well as with himself.. Revenge is the power that destroys life.

The one who is centered in himself, his resistance is towards an inappropriate situation not any person in particular, because what is not the universal truth cannot be supported. Resistance is the ability through which life thrives.
Participate in a war in your life with discretion, there is victory in resistance, because it is mostly stemming from truth of the situation. Vengeance is sure to suffer and lose because it thrives in a personal truth which may not really fit the bill of the universal truth.
