I just finished watching a video on Vairagaya that was made by Swami ji five years ago. In it, he outlined some guiding principles and encouraged the audience to perform two things every night before going to bed.

What are these 2 things?

1. Meditation before sleeping
2. 10-minute Reading session

Swami ji stated that our first connection with life is through our breath. So, before going to bed each night, one should make that connection with Breath. There’s no need to go anywhere special; simply take a few minutes(10-15 min) before night to sit up straight and focus on your breathing.

Yes, that’s the whole thing.

Read for 10 minutes

According to Swami ji, those who read good literature before bed tend to have a more optimistic outlook on life. Books are more than just a bunch of paper with words on it. It’s a summary of the life lessons and experiences that someone might have gained over the course of four decades.

Hence we shall not miss reading books every day. Reading books also helps one to get detached from their day-to-day life and experience the world of the author.

Reading spiritual autobiographies is the best way to gain inspiration and insight while walking the spiritual path.

My own example is that I once read Sri M’s autobiography, in which he said that he and his guru used to travel to different parts of the Himalayas, but when it was Sandhya time, his guru would make him stop wherever they were and have a meditation session.

And in the Swara Vigyan book, I discovered a statement from Lord Shiva in which he tells Maa Parvati that when air flows in and out of both nostrils, it is termed Sandhya for a Yogi.

And I’ve found that it’s much easier for me to sit still and meditate when breathe flows through both nostrils. I also double-checked how my breath flows when I practised meditation. And when you’re really into it, it’ll be coming out your both nostrils.

And there, my friends, is the glory of books. Books can aid everyone on any journey, including the spiritual one.

Even Warren Buffett, the legendary investor, reads books he hasn’t already read. He is completely detached from the sense that he has made so many wonderful investments and is Old enough to teach other. He’s always been a curious learner.

And just so you know, I also practise this Forgiveness meditation right before bedtime; it’s one of the most beneficial meditations I’ve ever come across.

I’m curious, though: which of your existing nightly rituals do you plan to keep up?
