In the sixth century, there lived a saint who was also a poet named Karaikkal Ammaiyar. It was said that her husband left her because of her miraculous spiritual powers. Tradition also says that being thus rejected by her husband, Karaikkal totally dedicated herself to Shiva and meditated in a deep forest. She asked and obtained to boons from Shiva. One was to make her ugly so tht people would avoid her and the second was she wanted to witness the celestial dance of Shiva and Kali .It was for her that Shiva danced at Tiruvalankatu, a desolate place surrounded by ghosts and demons. In her poem ,she described herself as the ghost of Karaikkal. In iconography, some of her extant images remind og goddess Chamunda.
