Today’s post I am sharing a little music I recorded on the piano. This is a song I have often heard my grandma singing and I would fall a sleep to it many a times. This song is called Bhava Sager, and is sung everyday at the vesper service at the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math. It’s a rendition on the piano. But I am also sharing the meaning of the lyrics of the first two verses. I hope it can soothe our frayed minds and souls.

(I salute the Gurudeva) Who is the (only) means of crossing this Ocean of Samsara (Worldly Existence),
(Who is the only means of) Breaking the Bondage of the Son of the Sun God (i.e. Yamadeva, the god of Death),
: I have approached You as a Servant, for Your Refuge, with a Mind filled with the Fear (of the never-ending Samsara) …
… O Gurudeva, Please shower Your Mercy on me, (Please shower Your Grace on this) Helpless soul,

(I salute the Gurudeva) Who dispels the darkness (of Ignorance) by illuminating the cave of the Heart (with Spiritual Knowledge),
(O my Lord) You are Vishnu, Prajapati (Brahma) and Shankara (in essence),
(And) the Vedas declare You as the Supreme Brahman greater than everything,
O Gurudeva, Please shower Your Mercy on me, (Please shower Your Grace on this) Helpless soul,

Salutations to all the Gurus who grace our lives with their presence.
