Something quite amusing happened a few days ago and I thought I’ll share it here.
We often look down upon our house helps because they do not have as much formal education, and we end up thinking that they are pretty dumb and are slow to catch onto things. But nothing could be farther from the truth.
Before we go further into the story, you must know that the house in which I live is one of those big, old, joint family houses, that have a lot interconnected corridors and strangers (like the househelp of my extended family members or the people doing a paint job in my aunt’s portion of the building and so on) keep coming in our house . As a result most of the things are kept under lock and keys.
A few day ago I was standing on the balcony which is attached to our kitchen, looking at the stray dog, I usually feed. We all have just had our lunch. My mother called out my name and told me to lock the kitchen door before leaving as she retired to her room for a quick afternoon nap. I said alright and got lost in my own world of thoughts. Being the forgetful person I am, I had invariably forgotten to put the padlock on the door’s handle before leaving. Just as I was about to enter my room, Reba didi (our househelp who cleans the house) who was wiping the floor nearby, looked up and asked me, ” Didn’t your mother tell you to lock the kitchen door ?”. I was stumped. I said, “Oh yes! Thank God you reminded me.” But what left me so astonished was the fact that, when my mother had said those things, Reba didi was nowhere within earshot. She was working in the room across the corridor/mini hallway and we were separated by two thick walls. It made me realize, how much she is aware of her surroundings at all times. I wonder if she’s an undercover spy and in case she’s not one yet, it is without a doubt, a wonderful career prospect for her! 😂 ( Take it from me, who’s a sucker for detective books and movies)
Even though she’s not as educated as me, she’s much more sharper than me even at an age nearing 60. I hope I can learn a thing or two from her instead of being so full of myself.
Thank you soo much for reading my blog. See you soon. 🙂
