Chitragupta was born to Goddess Parvati in a Chitra or painting. Eventually, he moved into the womb of Gomatha Kamdhenu and was born on the Pournami day in the first of Tamil months called Chithirai.
Chitra Pournami or Chitra Purnima is a famous festival of the Hindus celebrated with much devotion and respect. The other names for this festival are Madhu Purnima and Chaitha Poonam. This festival is in honour of the deity Chitragupta, the accountant of Yamadharmaraja, the Lord of Justice. It is strongly believed that Chitragupta keeps track of the virtues and sins we commit in our lives. As the name indicates, Chitra Purnima falls on the moon’s Full phase in the month of Chithirai in the Tamil calendar. It usually occurs during the English months of April or May.
According to mythology, it is understood that as the record keeper of Yama, Chitragupta would evaluate each and every soul after their death to be good or bad depending on their deeds during their life on earth. Therefore, it becomes essential to seek pardon for all the sins committed and appease Chitragupta on Chitra Purnima day.

The rituals to be done on Chitra Purnima or Chitra Pournami
· On this day, various rituals are performed in several Indian temples. The most famous one is the temple for Chitragupta in Kanchipuram. It is a temple specifically dedicated to Chitragupta.
· The Chandramoulishwar temple in Thiruvakkarai and the Airavateshwarar temple in Darasuram, Chitraguptaji Maharaj Temple in Hajipur, and Chitragupta Mahadeva Devalayam Temple in Hyderabad are noteworthy temples in which this festival is celebrated in a grand way.
· Another age-old practice that is followed on Chitra Pournami is taking a holy dip. It is considered that by doing this, the sins committed upto seven generations before us would be washed away. Worshipping Chitragupta on Chitra Pournami or Chitra Purnima with complete faith and devotion is sure to provide positive results.
· Devotees also worship Lord Vishnu and observe the Satyanarayana vratam or fasting on this day. They also recite the Satyanarayana Katha. Satyanarayana Pooja is performed on this day. This will not only bestow health and wealth on the worshippers but will negate all their sins. Further, worshipping God will ensure that the devotees lead a honest life by overcoming all obstacles.
· On Chitra Pournami, the deity is adorned with flowers and other decorations, and various types of delicacies like sweet pongal, payasam, and vadai are offered as prasadam. Generally, the food prepared for this festival is without salt.
· As Chitragupta is the son of Gomadha Kamadhenu, devotees should avoid consuming dairy and dairy products while fasting on Chitra Pournami.
· Another custom practised by people is to draw a kolam at the entrance but leave the southern portion blank. This kolam is wiped out soon after the pooja rituals are completed.
· On Chitra Pournami, Indra and Brihaspati’s chronicles are narrated to invoke divine blessings. At the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Devendra or Indra Puooja is held on Chitra Pournami day.
· In order to seek the blessings of Chitragupta and beseech his forgiveness for all the sins committed it is best to donate food and clothes to the poor and needy on the auspicious day.
· Devotees are also advised to read the Hindu holy script Bhagwad Gita as it is considered to be a significant ritual. For beneficial results, devotees can chant Gayatri Mantra or the Om Namo Narayana mantra 108 times.
