Phones are the most time-consuming device of all. They are omnipresent – we use them in bed, in bathrooms, at work, or anywhere where there is signal. In fact, we spend around 4 hours a day on our phones. This addiction is one of the most dangerous as it drains a resource that can never return: time.

One of the best ways to avoid being glued to our phones is to keep them away from us. Atomic Habits author James Clear likes to call this technique “out of sight, out of mind”, meaning that if something is not easily accessible, our minds drift to an easier alternative. Instead of having your phone next to you at all times, maybe keep an interesting book on your desk. If your phone is somewhere else (not necessarily farther away but out of sight), then our eyes will drift to the book first and foremost. This is an excellent way to limit screen time.

Apart from that, there are many other ways that we can break this habit, such as using deductive skills to identify patterns in our phone usage or deleting social media apps. Above all, it is imperative that we do not use our phone while eating or showering as this can lead to our minds associating the activity in question with phone usage.
