Creative writing tips by Swami Ji

A few days ago, I watched the sample lessons of the Creative writing course available on os.me virtual retreats. This is instructed by our Om Swami Ji and respected Sadhvi Vrinda Om. You can view this course here.

I have gathered some tips given by them in those samples. I know, these are not enough to understand the art of creative writing, but these tips have their own importance. And, definitely, if we work on these, our writing will improve to the next level.

And, I used here a few sentences as it is, spoken by Swami Ji, only to put information easily.

The importance of the first draft

Writing is like building a house but its blueprint is in mind. We have to arrange all stuff according to that. Sometimes blueprint also need to be changed. 

And, Swami Ji said the First story is the hardest and the next is going to be harder.😂

Because it will not be in your mind like the first one was. At this stage, your creativity will enrich, how you develop a story, which differs from the first is a big challenge for you. If you put your mind to thinking, for a period of time, you can acquire this skill.

Emphasis

Perhaps, it is hard to explain this in words. Even then, let me try.

Emphasis is used where we want to highlight or providing importance to anything or person in the sentence. I will suggest watching Swami Ji’s lesson for more clarification.

Using vivid words

Using vivid words, not only means applying more tight and stiff words. It is about using the right words. A writer should use those words and phrases that show the inner experiences of the character, or how the character is feeling in any action. Vivid words are energized words with emotions. 

Never Bore Your Reader

‘Never Bore your reader’, is told 3 times by Swami Ji in that lesson. In short, he is saying to never bore your reader.

A reader picks up your story and decides to spend quality time. But if you have written with a flowery language, added non-sense without any sense, it is sure he will like to walk along than reading you.

You should not write anything which has not any mean. The character is walking on grass, climbing the tree, jumps in well, he is sad, or happy, feeling ecstasy or loving everything should be meaningful. Don’t use 10 words, if the sentence not needs more than 7.

What the current sentence is saying, should be followed by the next sentence.

Three important things in a story

Blurb– Cover pages, title and tagline can be supposed as Blurb parts. Its motive is to excite and make readers curious about the story. When there is no curiosity in mind, no one will step out to buy or read the story.

How you begin and how you end are also the key aspects of the story. Swami Ji said If the writer knows clearly how to begin and end the story, the rest can be filled.

Leave something to their imagination

This is really very powerful tip I learnt. A writer should stand one step ahead of the reader’s thinking. Here the writer has to use his intelligence for knitting the story.

Sci-fi and mystery novels are great examples of it. The writer must not explain every happening in the story.

Using tagline

A tagline is the essence or indicator of all your story. It tells the reader what your story is about.

Swami Ji said, ‘Whether it is a story, business, or anything, if one can’t sum up about that in one sentence(in a tagline), then he won’t know about what it is.’ It is nothing but confusion.

It improves not only our thinking but brings clarity about the story too.

The ending of the story

Life too ends, fir ye to story hai. I want to accept a fact about me here that, I don’t want to end my story/story, maybe life also. I think this is because of my very attachment. Ending breaks the attachments.

And, this is all difference between Love and attachment. In love, you will leave that to go in front of the world fearlessly. But before leaving you decorates that, fills with the beauty of yourself, share positive energy to not falling him down. That is what, Shiva did with us, filled with his love, power, ShivTatva.
