Once upon a time, there was a Hare and a Tortoise…

Yeah, You all know this story! So, why I am so excited about this story today?  There is a relevance to this story in my life. I consider myself a tortoise when it comes to physical activities like yoga, walking, swimming, etc. Mostly I am very slow and not a contender in all these activities. But the winter of 2021 was different. I was regularly going for walks with a buddy. She was a step counter and walked ruthlessly to achieve her daily count. Hearing daily about the 10k steps I decided I want to complete this task one day. One fine evening when the weather was pretty good on the hills I decided I am going to walk. I took the courage to walk around the hills on a long and unexplored path dragging my friend along. We completed one circle around the hills in almost one hour. And she checked her device, we had successfully completed 10k plus steps. I felt excited like anything! It was a winning moment! Slow and steady is definitely the winning mantra.

Here is my Tortoise win moment! 🙂

The winter went happily and swiftly. In 2022  I never had any resolutions, we stopped our regular walking due to some unknown reasons.   I tried going to a gym only to stop after a few days. I was left without any remarkable workouts for an entire year. Diwali came and I treated myself to sweet homemade delicacies gifted by relatives. I was putting on weight and was becoming too lethargic to walk. Whenever I went out to the garden I sat quietly in one corner feeling guilty that I am not catching up with my brisk walks. On one occasion I was sitting in the park and listening to Swamiji’s Discourse I realized I cannot sit cross-legged as my knees started hurting badly. I had to get back to my regular walking somehow or other.

The new year came and our vision board happened. I added 30 minutes of walking to my Feb micro habit. I started walking mindfully and as slowly as possible in the park for five to ten minutes with  Kinhin Meditation on Black Lotus App. This got me started.   By mid-January, I started ‘slow walking ‘once again on the hills enjoying the serenity of nature.

Feb started. I decided to catch up with my #bebettermewithosdotme vision board. 30 minutes of walking still looked difficult. I split my 30 minutes into two portions. First half I did bare feet walking on the grass, second half I walked around the garden on the walking trail. Initially, the second half was difficult, so I started playing songs on my mobile to give me company.  Four songs in 15 minutes were the count. Sometimes I listened to the same song in the loop for 15 minutes. I added small stretches and hand rotations to the first half. I didn’t want to increase the duration, so I stuck to my 30 minutes.

Everything went well for the first fifteen days. Then came a break, I had to attend many social get-togethers, my schedule broke and I felt heavy and guilty once again. But I caught up again after a break of five days, with a few yoga asanas included in the first half. 😊I feel so grateful to the vision board. I couldn’t do anything on my second goal ‘food diary ‘, will give it a try in March.

What worked for me is putting my goal in a time box and sticking to it. Waiting to hear about your Feb goals in the comments section.  If you don’t have one yet, start today. Today is always the best day.
