While talking to our Gardner today he addressed me as Mem Sahab…..that rang in my head like Ekta Kapoor’s jarring music at a dialogue in a Saas bahoo serial…mem sab mem saab mem saab!

Staff of Britishers who use to come with their wives in scorching Indian summer used to be referred to 75 years back as Mem( goree madam) saab.

  • The British ruled us for almost 200 years and i really think how tough it would be for them. Our summer season and facilities wise to travel saat samundar paar with families and Little kids in a country which was full of mosquitoes and different hygiene standards! Not being a history student i don’t know weather they traveled on sea for how many months with sea sickness to an unknown land with different eating habits! Since all of us have seen them as dictator we never thought of this part i suppose.

Anyway today s Mem saab made me write this blog where i wanted to mention my Father in law.

As soon as we reach out of station his language becomes that of a Gora saab.

From waiter to manager of hotel and taxi drivers he says…humko mall road jaana mangta, humko roti mangta ,humko room clean karna mangta!Β

At this we tell him Papaji u r Indian and so r they why u speak so? And at times he laughs at others gets irritated!

What have British given your family as a habbit?
