I was enjoying my tea in the morning and was observing one girl from many days through my window. I could not understand why she sit under a tree every morning at 5:00 AM. Dogs were barking at her continuously but she was not getting scared.  I wanted to go downstairs and ask her but Indian society is a dangerous place. If anybody sees me with her, they might judge my character. That fear was not allowing me to help her. With all this guilt and confusion I carried on with my tea and imagination of her reason. After a moment I noticed, she was talking to that tree and crying.

I was unable to resist now. I asked my wife to go there and ask her. My wife requested me to come with her too, so we both went. When that girl saw my wife, she just hugged her and started crying. We sat with her and asked the reason for her daily visit. She said, a month ago, my mother died under this tree. We were surprised and asked her the reason. My drunk father used to hit my mother and for peace, my mom used to sit here. Last month, one snake has took my mother’s life. That’s why I come here and I ask the tree, why he could not save her. As trees are supposed to give shelter, peace, and food. Tree’s job is to give not take. Then why did he took my mother? I and my wife started crying after seeing the pain of that girl. We did not know the answer to why.

I just held the hand of that girl and said, your mother was already dying every moment when she was alive so this plant just helped her. Dying every moment is more difficult than dying once. A tree has given her a better life. She is here. She is around you and showering her love and blessings. See the things gratefully. That girl started crying even more and hugged us. She was thanking us for being there for her.  I and my wife took her to our home and enjoyed tea with her.

Keep smiling,

Thank you,

Riya Om
