Today is the second day of Chaitra Navratri. On the second day of Chaitra Navratri Maa Brahmacharini is worshiped. The name Brahmacharini means the person who penances. Maa Brahmacharini, is seen wearing white clothes, holding a rosary in her right hand and Kamandal, a water utensil in her left hand. Maa brahmacharini symbolizes peace, happiness, devotion , determination, bliss and calm.

She was born at the home of Daksha Prajapati. Maa brahmacharini is considered as the unmarried meditating form of Devi Parvati, who wishes to marry Lord Shiva. Firstly, she survived on fruits and then on dried beliva leaves. But afterwards, she quit food and dedicated all her time to prayers.  Her dedication forced Lord Brahma to give her blessings to marry Lord Shiva.

Worshiping her brings wealth, prosperity, strength and happiness to everyone’s life. Her avatar symbolizes loyalty, wisdom, and knowledge as she was born in the Himalayas. The color that is associated with her is green as the green color signifies new beginnings and growth. People used to wear green on the second day of chaitra navratri.

Unsalted butter, sugar, Fruits and sweets are offered to the Maa brahmacharini along with garlands of lotus and hibiscus flowers during her worship and to receive her blessings. After the prayers, the bhog is offered to unmarried women who symbolize Goddess Durga herself.
