Since I started meditation, the only source of knowledge for me was YouTube videos. And from there, I learned a lot of drama about meditation. Things like sitting in meditation with hands stretched and lying on knees, the head should be not straight but slightly up, the various feel-good meditations, rotating of the body in meditation is actually good and signifies that the body parts are healing, etc. For 3 years I did all these comedy YouTube meditations and got nowhere and was not getting any benefits of meditation. But I didn’t lose my hope as once I experienced deep bliss in my meditation and always hankered for it. Then after getting fed up from all the visualization meditation, law-of-attraction meditation, staring at the nose meditation! sleeping meditation, breath focus meditation, etc. I thought that now to leave these all drama aside and learn from a guru. I purchased the “Art of Meditation” course by Swamiji and later after watching it my hands chanced upon “A million thoughts”.

This book completely changed my life.

And for the above line, I am not using the ever famous self-help slogan, “changed my life”. For most out there who claim this book, that course, this video, that seminar, changed their lives, mostly except for intellectual understanding nothing really changes. You can observe it, whoever claims these, just observe them and you will realize nothing actually changed, they are the same as before.

Now, when I observe myself, this book really changed me for the good. Think how would one feel after reading this book that for 3 years, all the so-called meditation that I was doing incorrectly. From sitting with stretched hands to thinking movement is good in meditation, differentiation between actual mediation and feel-good mediation. Apart from learning the correct posture and various typess of meditation, the three best things that I learned from this book are :

  • The nature of the mind and how to deal with a thought.
  • Meditation is hard work, and rewards come afterward.
  • Six principles of meditation by Tilopa.

Here is my amazon and Goodreads review that I posted last year after completing the book :

While there are many books out there on ‘meditation and its benefits ‘ but I didn’t found one which includes all the steps required all penned down from a self-realized soul who has more than 15,000 hours of the first-hand experience.

The book is divided into various topics ranging:

1. MIND, THOUGHTS, AND ACTIONS
2. THE PATH OF MEDITATION
3. ELEMENTS OF GOOD MEDITATION
4. THE PRACTICE OF MEDITATION
5. VIRTUES OF A GOOD MEDITATOR
6. HURDLES ON THE PATH
7. SEVEN YOGIC PRACTISES
8. MONITORING YOUR PROGRESS
9. MEDITATION IN A NUTSHELL
10. THE REALIZATION

The best part of the book is that is not written as serious stuff but is full of humor and jokes. One of the best parts of the book is that it is not just about meditation as just meditation is not enough. It includes all the virtues that are required by a meditator and all the hurdles that a meditator will encounter in the path from external ones to internal ones. This book, not the focuses on what is meditation but also on what meditation is not as there are too many misconceptions about it. One of the biggest misconceptions I personally used to hold was the longer your session the grander the benefit. But Swamiji says that it’s far better to do short sessions of crisp meditation than to sit for an hour and not knowing where you were the whole time.

IT’S CONTAINS 10000 TIMES MORE VALUE FOR THE MONEY YOU GIVE.
