A few days ago, I was spending time with my mom and she shared with me a beautiful story of an old lady so I thought I should share it with you all and also share what I learnt from it. Here’s is the story:

One upon a time, there lived an old lady who is ardent devotee of Bhagwan Shiva. She used to chant OM NAMAH SHIVAYA whole day throughout her life. Though the lady chanted whole day but she did not give food and water to anyone who comes to her house and didn’t contribute in any kind of charity. She always chant Om Namah Shivay …… Om Namah Shivay….. but did not help anyone. This rudeness of old lady spread in whole village. After sometime this behaviour of old lady become known to Bhagwan Shiva Ji also.

Shiva Ji thought let me take a test of this old lady. So as decided Bhagwan Ji came at the door of this old lady in form of a Brahmin and asked to give him some food. The old lady said that I haven’t prepared the food now because it’s morning so you can come in afternoon. He said ok I will come in the afternoon. He came in the afternoon and said to give food again. The old lady said that I haven’t made the food now. You can come in evening. He said okay I will come in evening. He came in the evening again and said to give some food. The old lady said that you are bit late my family has consumed the food. You can come in the morning. The Brahmin came in the morning and said to give some food. The old lady harshly said that you did not get that I am not interested in giving food. The Brahmin said ok.

After some years passed when the time of old lady came to die, Yamraj appeared to take the bad soul of old lady. The old lady asked why I am going to narak, I should go to Swarg because I always chanted Om Namah Shivay ……Om Namah Shivay……. whole through my life. Now, why are you taking me to the Narak.

Yamraj said it’s true that you chanted your whole life but you didn’t give food to poor nor contributed in any kind of charity. She started crying and feeling pity about herself and she requested him to please take me to the Bhagwan Shiva for last one time. Yamraj said ok I will take you to Bhagwan. After reaching there she said to Bhagwan Shiva ji that I chanted your name always. But you are sending me to the narak, why ? Bhagwan Ji said that you haven’t done any charity and didn’t give food to poor and needy. She pleaded Bhagwan for one Upkar on her so that she can repent on her conduct. Bhagwan Ji said that I can give you one week more to live. Old lady felt bad and in these seven days she served people by offering bhandaras, giving food and all things she could and did all the charitable work. On the seventh days she started chanting Om Namah Shivay……. Om Namah Shivay………. and when her one week finished, she left her body and finally went to swarg (heaven).

The moral of the story is that we should be a kind person and help everyone in every possible way we can. I also learnt that devotion and service go together. 🙏🙏 And I am also grateful to mom who shared with me this wonderful story and made me familiar with devotion and kindness.

Jai Sri Hari 🙏🙏🌷

Keep Smiling 😊
