Research shows that approximately 87% of high school and college students procrastinate and that approximately 25-75% of adults procrastinate! Now, I think that those stats themselves are enough to prove that this is a really widespread and severe problem. Procrastination can potentially lead to a severe drop in students’ schoolwork and grades, eventually affecting their overall mental health and self-esteem. Research also revealed that students who procrastinate experience higher levels of frustration, guilt, stress, and anxiety. In some cases, the situation gets so severe, it leads to depression.
Now, we all want to know, how do I stop procrastinating? This is a question, that has perhaps no answer. Now, I don’t want to beat around the bush here. I want to keep this article brief, so that you, as a reader aren’t just rolling your eyes and skipping through just to get to the main point, how do I overcome procrastination? Let me get straight to the point. There is no answer to that question. In fact, odds are that you are probably putting off some important work right now, and are telling yourself, let me read this article, I will do my work later. This is the root cause of the problem, but now that you are here, I will try my best to make the best use of your time, and hopefully inspire you, and put an end to your terrible habit of procrastinating.
Now, as I have said multiple times, there is no straightforward answer to the question. No matter how many videos you watch, or how many articles you read, you will not get your answer. You just need to do your work. That’s it. It’s that simple. There is no simpler way for me to say it. Just sit down, and do your work. Now, that isn’t as simple as it sounds, and I know that. You need to force yourself to do the work. Think about the consequences, and what will happen if you don’t do your work. Just sit down, remove all distractions, and force yourself to do your work. Set a timer for however long you want to work, and just sit, and do it. As simple as that. However, make sure that your time is realistic and genuinely achievable with effort. Don’t set the timer for triple the amount you actually work. You will eventually get exhausted, and not do the work, and continue procrastinating. Also, make sure to take breaks in the middle. Again, set your breaks for times where you genuinely think you will need them.
Trust me, if you do this once, the relief that you get in the end, can not be described in words. You will have your work done and will have no load on you, no stress, or pressure. However, more importantly, you will feel accomplished, and that you utilized your time wisely today. Trust me, this feeling can not be described in words. It is more satisfying than anything in this world like winning a lottery or buying the latest iPhone. Just force yourself to do this a couple of times, and when you get a habit of it, your life will suddenly become a lot easier. Trust me, that hour or two of work is definitely worth the feeling of accomplishment you get. Just try it once, then you’ll get what I mean.
