In Durga Saptashati, a puranic text from Markandeya Purana depicting the battles of Ma Durga with various demons. One of the most fierce battle described is between Goddess Kali and demon Raktabija.
Raktabija had a special boon. For every drop of his blood which would fall on ground, thousand more Raktabija would rise. Thus in a way it was impossible to kill Raktabija in battle. After a long battle, from the forehead of Goddess Durga emerged Goddess Kali.
Goddess Kali, killed Raktabija and drank all its blood before it could touch the ground.
What does Raktabija symbolize in our life? I think Raktabija are our desires. If we look carefully, we often think that fulling a desire will give us happiness or peace. But in reality none of these happen. Achievement of one desire causes thousand more desires to arise. It is an endless cycle. This is what life is for majority of people, a mere-go-round of desires happiness pain repeat.
Unless we are able to manifest Goddess Kali in our life, we can never get rid of Raktabija aka our desires.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the esoteric meaning of above described battle.
Jai Shri Hari!
Thank you
