Holi – The festival of colors is here now. It is one of the most important festival celebrated in India. Holi is celebrated each year with zeal and enthusiasm in the month of March by Hindus. This year holi is celebrated all over India on 18th March. Holi is called the festival of colors because people play with colors and apply colors to each other’s faces to get coloured in the essence of the festival and enjoy with each other.
As per Hindu mythology, Holi originates from the long story of Hiranyakashyap, the demon king and his religious son Prahlad, who was a passionate follower of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap hates Lord Vishnu and he also doesn’t like the worshiping of his son to Lord Vishnu. One day the demon king decided to kill Prahlad by burning him with the help of his sister, Holika. For the universe, Holika was not affected by fire. Hiranyakashyap came up with an idea to kill Prahlad with the help of Holika.
The next morning, Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad on her lap on Hiranyakashyap’s orders. However, Prahlad began praying to Lord Vishnu, who commanded a gust of wind that blew the shawl off Holika onto Prahlad, saving him and letting her burn to death. Unexpectedly, The fire however did not harm Prahlad and instead, engulfed Holika in flames, who is resistant to fire. This symbolizes that Holi celebrates the victory of a worshiper of Lord Vishnu over the wicked King Hiranyakashyap and Holika. Holi is the significance of the victory of good over evil.
Holi is the festival of love celebrated with great joy and excitement. Holi celebrations begin with Holika Dahan, as people celebrate holi by lighting a bonfire to signify the victory of good over evil. On the next day, people wake up early in the morning to play with colors and Gulal. They get together with friends and family and apply color on each other’s faces. Children fill balloons and their toy guns with water and play with each other. People also eat sweets and delicious food and drink thandai specially prepared for this festival.
