It was time for her to leave. But how could she hide the stains on her clothes. Blood stains!! Bella looked around for her shawl. It lay there on the floor of the cave. Relieved she wrapped it around her. She turned around to look at him. His eyes were closed.
With a heavy heart she walked home recalling the events of the past two days..
She had started her evening walk the day before and was as admiring the beauty of this stunning landscape for the 100th time. Set at 3000 mts above sea level and surrounded by snowclad peaks she couldn’t believe that this was now her home. The stunning Sangla Valley, this mountainous land of Kinnauri tribes!, was her home too!! She had met Pradeep (her husband) for the first time, when she came as a tourist to this place and it was love at first sight! They were married within a year and here she was in this beautiful mountain village enjoying the best of both worlds.
Her walk that evening led to an unexpected turn of events and here she was standing in the verdah of her house waiting for her husband to join her .
As they sat down to talk over a steaming hot cup of tea she narrated to him about how she had met the elusive Khorshuna who were not seen in the valley for more than 2 decades.
The Khorshuna (what the villagers called them) were tall mysterious beings carrying what it appeared what it looked like a lamp or light on their heads. They used to be seen by the villagers on the other side of the Baspa river until the late 70’s.The Baspa river flows through Sangla valley. No one had seen them since the last 3 to 4 decades. .
It was hard to believe that she had actually met them. There were 10 of them in that cave that day. She had seen one of them from the corner of her eye during her walk and followed him to the cave. He seemed to want her to come along with him. They seemed to be comfortable with her. It was almost like they had been watching her and knew that their location would be safe with her. They needed her help to get them some medicinal plants which grew at a fair distance away from where they were. One of them lay injured. She’d guessed it was for him. She observed them closely. They barely wore any clothes in the bitterly cold climate. They seemed to function at a different level of consciousness. They knew everything about the village but the villagers knew nothing about them. She had returned the next evening with the plants they had asked her to get. She had helped them to make a paste and apply it over his wound. Some blood had spilt onto her clothes and within minutes of applying the paste the wound had magically healed. Feeling relieved the injured Khorshuna, had fallen asleep.
They thanked Bella for her help and announced that this was the last time they would meet. They were moving to a more secluded location.
Pradeep looked at Bella with amazement and disbelief. No one had ever met the Khorshuna let alone interacted with them. They walked back to that spot on the mountains the next day. As to be expected there was no sign of them.
