According to scriptures and holy books we live, die and are re-born innumerable time.
I think we die and are reborn numerous times in one life time.
For what we think we are, is nothing but a personality created by our brain.
This personality is created by brain. Brain stores all the experiences this body had with the external world thought its five senses, then it runs all this stored experiences in software called mind.
Out comes a personality we call myself and psychology calls as ego.
This personality has its unique characteristic likes and dislikes, aversions and craving etc.
We think this is who I am.
In reality this personality also called ego is created by brain so that this body can function in this world.
This personality is not a permanent entity, because with new experiences mind keeps on changing this personality for what it thinks is best suited for survival in this world.
With time this personality changes so much that nothing of what it was some time ago remains in it.
Same process keeps on occurring in our body. Every few years we have a complete new body where all the cells have been replaced by new ones.
These changes happen in such a subtle manner, that most of us will not realize it.
So in a way, when a new upgraded personality replaces an old personality, what we call me dies and a new self is born.
Most of us lead a passive life without any awareness, so as a result most of our tendencies and craving of old personality are carried from old personality to new personality, unless we are proactively working on changing them.
For most of us tendencies and craving remain the same they just change their form.
These not changing tendencies and craving, along with the thread of time and body gives this personality a sense of continuity.
Looking deeply with awareness you will realize that every moment of time what we call me is dying and being reborn.
