Chandi Homam is dedicated to Goddess Chandi, a form of Goddess Durga. She killed many evil demons to protect the gods and humans and restore order in the world. The Sanskrit word “Chandi” means “She who tears apart thought.” She tears apart thoughts that feed the ego and divert us from the righteous path.

Goddess Chandi: The Destroyer of Demons

Goddess Chandi has many names, including Katyayani, Kaushiki, Asthadasabuja Mahalakshmi, Mahishasuramardini, Chandika, Durga, Ambika, etc. The Markandeya Purana has a section in which her attributes are described in 700 Slokas.

The Devi Bhagavata as well as the Markandeya Purana, which contains the famous Saptashati, form the basis of Chandi worship. They describe her heroic exploits in detail. She fought and killed many demons, including Madhu and Kaitabha, Chanda and Munda, Dhumralochana, Raktabija, Shumbha and Nishumbha, Mahishasura, etc. These stories are recounted in 13 chapters containing 700 stanzas. The Navakshari Mantra, which has 9 letters or aksharas, is associated with the Goddess. It is one of the important Mantras in Shakti worship. Chandi is believed to reside in Mahakal, near Shiva’s abode, Kailasa.

The Supreme Goddess Durga is referred to as Chandi in Devi Mahatmyam. She is violent and impetuous, a fierce form of Shakti who represents feminine power. This epithet finds mention only in the Markandeya Purana. One reason is that the Ramayana and Mahabharata, the early Puranic texts, were in Sanskrit. Chandi as a Goddess belongs more to the religious traditions of South India and Bengal. Both these places have a strong Shakta cult or Mother Goddess worship. In the south, she is Chandi Chamundi and is a rural deity. Tantric sadhana was prevalent by the time of Markandeya Purana, and Chandi became a common epithet.

An Iconography that Evokes Terror

Goddess Chandi is depicted as a black or red-complexioned deity. She wears a garland of skulls (Mundamala) and has around 12 arms which hold a Trishul, damaru, a snake, sword, skull-mace, kapala (skull-cup), thunderbolt, a severed head, and paanapatra (drinking vessel). She stands on a corpse or sits on a pretasana or vanquished demon. She has a skeletal frame, protruding teeth, and long nails. Her ornaments are serpents, skulls, bones, skulls, scorpions, and symbols of death and disease. She has matted hair tied with serpents. She also wears a crescent moon. Fiends and goblins keep her company. Her mounts include a lion, tiger, and owl.

The most auspicious time to perform Chandi Homam is during the Navratri festival. Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdasi, Magha, Amavasya, Jyeshta Amavasya, Chaitra, Karthika, and Pournami are the best days.

The Pooja must be performed during the daytime, and it should end before sunset. Kumari Pooja and Suvasini Pooja are part of this ritual.

Install the idol of Goddess Chandi along with Lord Ganesha’s idol.
Do Ganapati Pooja first. Then recite Chandi Mantras to invoke Goddess Chandi.
