The first time I met him, it was in the office of the deputy medical superintendent. As I entered the room, I saw him sitting on the chair. By the time I reached and sat in the chair next to him, I had scanned him and made an opinion about him. I thought he was a poor man probably a relative of a patient and was here to get some discount on the hospital bill. Later on, I realized how wrong I was, but at that time I thought so because of his appearance.
He was wearing old worn-out clothes, his hair with salt and pepper look was a bit long, and uncombed and looked like he had not shaved for a couple of days. But what caught my attention was that he was sitting very still and his eyes looked like either he was deeply troubled or deeply calmly. What was it from both options, I could not guess.
Deputy medical superintendent said to me as I sat on the chair “here is someone you would like to meet, he is a retired doctor and has come here to teach Pro bono.” We exchanged some pleasantry and talked for a bit before my work finished with the deputy medical superintendent.
As I came out of the room I wanted to go inside again and talk with him, but somehow decided against it. About an hour afterwards as I was going toward the main entrance of the college I saw him standing there. I asked him and came to know that he was waiting for the college car to drop him at the bus stand.
I told him that I am going toward that side and will give him a lift. I wanted to talk to him and somehow nature made it happen.
I came to know that he lives in a small village near Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh which was about 150 km from here. A few minutes I got in the car till we reached the bus stand were not enough, so after a week or so I found myself at his doorsteps. This time I got two days to spend with him. It took me years to practically follow the knowledge I got from him in those two days.
One of the most important habits to develop he told me was Zero balancing. It is done in machines so that they can be brought back to a perfectly balanced natural state which will lead to the correct and smooth function of the machine.
Similarly, he told me that we need to do our zero balancing before sleeping every night so that we can start fresh every day without any baggage of yesterday to pull us down. The method to do so is very easy, just sit for some time before sleeping. Go over your day mentally in a few minutes, and see what you learned from your experiences. After learning it is time to let go of everything.
Somebody may have said some harsh words to you, let it go. You might have said or done something you didn’t like, let that also go. In the end, let go of all the bad as well as good experiences you had in the day. He said, “In the end, they are just experiences, it is we who label them good or bad according to our preferences.”
He said,” Zero balancing is essential so that we can start each day anew like a newborn child full of wonder and amazement.”
Thank you for your time.
Jai Shree Hari.
