॥ॐ श्रीमात्रे नमः॥
॥oṃ śrīmātre namaḥ॥
I am immanent in all beings and I hum like the female bumble bee. From my abode in Surya and Candra I gush forth in an unbroken flow of absolute sound (nada) like the flow of oil during the interval between the closing and opening of (God’s) eyes. As I travel (in turn through) all the centres of the body, from the root plexus to the crown with the brilliance of thousands of risen suns, fires and moons, I unfold (myself) as manifested sound… and become the mother of (all) sounds, showering objects of enjoyment in the same way as a cow (showers milk)…
Like a doe I flee farther and farther from the mind of the yogin. Yogins observing their vows bind me through their own devotion. Sixty-eight thousand yogins engaged in worshipping me and meditating on me as Harini have attained complete inwardness of mind (pratyahara). ((Taken from Lakshmi Tantra, a Panchratra text. Translation by Sanjukta Gupta (slightly abridged for brevity).))
If you came up to me and asked what is the one sadhana of the Divine Mother that you could do in your daily life as well as for your intense practice, without a moment’s hesitation I would say the Sri Suktam Sadhana. Taken from the oldest of the four Vedas, the Rigveda, this is the most powerful Vedic sadhana of Mother Goddess. In fact, its usage, adoption and application is so widespread that Sri Suktam is the only Vedic hymn that is used to invoke the divine feminine energy across the five branches of Sanatana Dharma: Shaivites (those who worship Shiva), Vaishnavas (those who predominantly worship Vishnu), Ganapatya (those who worship Ganesha), Saura (those who worship the Sun) and of course, Shakta (those who worship Mother Goddess). And this is the only hymn that is used unaltered in both Vedic and tantric worship.
Sri means Mother Divine, opulence, prosperity, refuge and progress. Suktam means eloquence, an ode of praise (written in a meter), or a hymn worthy of recitation. Sri Suktam is the most ancient Vedic hymn devoted to invoking, propitiating and even summoning Mother Goddess to make your journey on this planet joyous and meaningful. The Sri Suktam is mastered so you are aligned with the universal energy as you pursue the four purusharthas: dharma (spiritual wealth), artha (material wealth), kama (pleasures from fulfilment of desires), moksha (liberation).
Whether you wish to master the Vedic way of life or you are a Sri Vidya aspirant or simply someone interested in seeing how mantras can bring a profound shift in your consciousness and make a million things effortless in your life, your journey would be incomplete without Sri Suktam. I cannot write enough on how much opulence on all fronts this sadhana has brought into my life. I have written about the Sri Suktam Sadhana in detail in my book The Ancient Science of Mantras. Today, I am sharing with you the concise and simplified method of this sadhana. So simple that you almost just have to do the chanting in the evening and the fire offerings (yajna) in the morning.
As you may know that we will be doing the Sri Suktam Sadhana in the ashram from 24-Oct till 8-Nov (concluding on the morning of 9-Nov). For those of you who can’t join me physically, you can do so virtually at absolutely no cost whatsoever in the Sadhana app. You will be able to join me live in the Sadhana app and make all the offerings virtually. The morning yajna will also be broadcast live on os.me/live.
To understand the mechanics and dynamics of the Sri Suktam sadhana, please patiently read the notes below. They may appear daunting at first, but once you go through it a couple of times, you will find them pretty straightforward. Besides, in essence, there are only two steps: japa (chanting) in the evening and yajna in the morning. To simplify it utterly, I’ve removed all the other steps.
I reiterate: for yajna, I’ve explained the process below or if you like you can do it virtually with me in the Sadhana app.
Sri Suktam Sadhana is done over sixteen nights by dividing your day into two parts: evening and morning. Simply put, you do japa (chanting) in the evening and yajna (fire-offerings) in the morning. Here are the details:
Evening Routine
Sri Suktam has sixteen verses and every evening the chanting you do is of a mantra that is based on a verse of the hymn. Sixteen nights, sixteen verses, and therefore, sixteen mantras.
The evening routine involves chanting the mantra of that particular day. You can find the mantra and chant in the Sadhana app (it will be activated at the right time) or you can scroll down to the desired day in this post and see the mantra as well as hear the audio.
The usual recommendation (and that’s what I did when I first performed this sadhana 14 years ago), is to chant the mantra 1000 times. Chanting it 1000 times, however, can take anywhere between seven and nine hours depending on your concentration, focus, and stamina. This is a long stretch for most people, given you probably have other work you need to do during the day. If you do choose to chant it 1000 times, however, you can stretch your legs and all in between by standing up on your asana but by not abandoning it. When I did this sadhana, I wasn’t accustomed to sitting still for seven or nine hours (that I was blessed with when I later intensified my practice in the woods), so at the time, I would remain seated but just stretch my legs every couple of hours or so. In case you know that 7-9 hrs is too much for you, I then encourage you to go for a smaller goal. Maybe 108 times or 216 times or three rounds with your beads.
In other words, the minimum japa time is roughly 45 minutes and the maximum can end up around 9 hours. So rather than not doing the sadhana at all thinking you don’t have or can’t sit for 7 or 9 hours, I’d say just vow to chant 108 times at least and that won’t take you more than one hour including everything.
The important thing to remember is that if you choose to do 108 times on the first night, for example, you need to maintain the same count for each subsequent night. In other words, if you chant the mantra of the first night 108 times then on the 2nd night the mantra of that night should also be chanted for 108 times.
You can start your evening japa anytime after sunset. I used to start my evening routine at sharp 7 pm. (In my case, the preliminary pooja, nyasa, and invocation would take an additional up to 45 minutes but this time around, we have done away with all that and you simply have to chant the mantra).
Morning Routine
Your morning routine will involve performing the yajna (fire-offerings) of the same mantra that you chanted at night. In Sri Suktam sadhana, an allowance is made so you can drop the seed syllables and only do the yajna with the actual verse of the hymn. This can save you time. In case you are wondering, in my case, every time I did this sadhana, I performed the yajna with the seed syllables.
There are standard ingredients for the yajna (like a packet of havan samagri and ghee etc.), but for each day, there can be additional ingredients. I have listed those in the appropriate section below.
How to do the Sri Suktam Sadhana on your own
I’ve provided all the required details in this writeup and you are welcome to do this sadhana on your own. You don’t require my initiation, permission or intervention. Every evening (for sixteen nights) there is a new mantra and every morning you will do a yajna, fire offerings.
Things you need for this sadhana
1. Asana, mat; a blanket is best. Plus a piece of red cloth to cover it.
2. Desi ghee (approx 100 gms everyday).
3. A small lamp (oil can be ghee or sesame oil).
4. Havan samagri (approx half a packet everyday). I’ve just found this product on Amazon. You can use any you like.
5. A Yajna kunda or you can make your own fire pit. Here’s a sample on Amazon for yajna-kunda. You can buy any you like. (Details on making your own fire-pit can be found in the PDF provided in the How to do Yajna section below).
6. Special additional ingredient for yajna (every morning the ingredients may vary and they are listed listed next to the day itself.
7. Firewood for your yajna. It can be Mango (aamra), Cedrus Deodara or Deodara Cedar (devdaru), Butea Monosperma (dhak or palasha), Sacred fig (peepal), Prosopis cineraria (shami), Banyan (bargad or vata). Or, if you can afford it, then red sandalwood (rakta chandan) is also a very royal way of offering. (Personally, I’ve never done any yajna with just sandalwood.) If neither of these is available, take any clean firewood.
8. Dakshina, a charitable offering. A small amount of material offering you set aside every morning and use for charity wherever you like at the completion of your sadhana.
Evening Ingredients
You will need the following things every evening throughout the duration of the Sri Suktam sadhana:
1. Rudraksha beads for chanting. If you have done any sadhana in the past, you can use the same rosary. Or if you use rudraksha beads for any other japa, you can use the same chanting beads. You don’t need to buy a separate rosary.
2. A ghee lamp. You will need to light a small lamp in the evening. The lamp can be an earthen lamp or made from any metal. The wick should be a cotton wick or made from the sacred red thread (mauli). The oil should either be sesame oil or desi ghee.
3. A small pot of water. You will use this for purification. Once you are done with the evening ritual, you can offer this water either facing the sun or at the root of any plant or tree the next morning (after completing your morning yajna).
4. Your asana, a prayer mat. Best to use a blanket. Or, if you don’t have a blanket, use whatever you have available. Place a red cloth on your asana.
5. Fresh clothes every evening. Wearing red is ideal. Any other color will also do.
6. Money-box. Mother represents opulence and material wealth. So every night after the japa or morning after the yajna, set aside whatever you can, it can be just a dollar or Rs. 10 or whatever you can reasonably afford. Keep a small box and put your money in there. At the end of sixteen nights, you can offer this money at any shrine where Goddess is worshipped. If there’s no temple close by, just keep it with you and you can donate it whenever you have the opportunity to visit such a place over the next year. If neither of these is possible, donate it towards any noble cause for a girl child.
Evening Procedure
Ideally, you should be sitting down for your japa by 7pm or so. (Even those of you who are in Australia/NZ where the days are longer, you can also start at 7pm) Try to stick to the same time every day for the entire duration of this sadhana.
1. Take a bath and wear fresh clothes. Red is recommended but any color will do.
2. Sit on your asana, prayer mat, and take three sips of water to symbolize purification. (You can do the more elaborate steps of purification if you know them, but for now, this will do). Wash your hands with a few drops (once again, this is a symbolic gesture).
3. Follow the three japa steps. These steps have been listed separately for each night as the mantra changes every day. Please refer to the notes below.
5. If you decide to chant the mantra 1000 times, it would nearly be 3 or 4 am and you can straight away get to the yajna. If, however, you opted for a lower count and you get free earlier, you can sleep and then do the morning yajna. The earliest you can start the yajna is 3 am and the latest is 7 am.
6. After completing the yajna procedure, you can eat your breakfast etc. and get on with your day.
Morning Ingredients
The things you will require every morning for the Sri Suktam sadhana are as follows:
1. A readymade yajna kunda or a self-made firepit. You can buy a standard fire pit from the market or you can make one yourself. In the PDF provided on this page, I’ve shown the diagram.
2. A wooden spoon to offer ghee in the fire pit. Traditionally, there are two kinds of yajna spoon, sruka, a ladle, and sruva, a spoon. To keep things simple, just use any wooden spoon (please make sure you buy a new one. Later you can use it in your kitchen).
3. Ghee. Approx 50 – 100 gms of ghee every day.
4. Firewood. As per the notes above.
5. Havan-samagri. Half a packet every day should suffice in most cases. Empty half a packet in a bowl.
6. Any additional ingredients are listed next to each day in the notes below. Mix it with the havan-samagri. On the thirteenth night (fourteenth morning yajna), the ingredient is honey. You don’t have to mix honey with the samagri (though you can if you want) as it can be offered to the fire separately.
7. One ingredient for purna-ahuti. This is the last ahuti you’ll offer at the completion of every yajna. It’s listed next to each day in the notes below.
Morning Procedure
In the morning, you will need to perform a small yajna, fire-offerings. ((Although, I’ve mentioned this already in the Morning Ingredients section, but please note again that in addition to the havan-samagri, you’ll need to use additional ingredients that will change every day. The details of the special ingredient(s) are listed next to the day below. Just mix the special ingredient with the ones found in the packet of havan samagri. ))
If you are unable to do the yajna physically, you can do so virtually with me in the Sadhana app (at no cost whatsoever). And if you can’t do even that, there’s an alternative still. Refer to point no. 10 in the Relevant Notes section.
Following is the order of the mantras you have to chant while making fire-offerings:
1. Preliminary offerings (please refer to the Yajna PDF in the section below.)
2. 7 ahutis (offerings) of Om Gam Ganpataye Namah.
3. 21 ahutis of the mantra in step 1 (you can do more if you like).
4. 1 round of ahutis (108 times or approx 30 min) of the daily mantra.

Download the file: How To Do Fire-Offerings (Yajna)
This PDF contains the Yajna chapter from my Gayatri Sadhana book. You just have to follow the same methodology, the only thing that will change are the daily mantras. I’ve listed them next to each day in the following section.
Becoming a Yajmana
In a literal sense, the word yajmana means a patron or an institutor. When anything auspicious is done, there are usually many beneficiaries including the participants, service providers and so on, but there are a few stakeholders. Being a yajmana is akin to being a stakeholder. You don’t have to be a yajmana, particularly if you are also devoting time to doing the sadhana yourself. But, if you want to be one in this Sri Suktam Sadhana, you can. It is 100% optional and does not affect your ability to access and practice any aspect of this sadhana with me. If you still wish to be a yajmana, here are the two options:
1. Physically at the ashram
If you are going to be physically present in the ashram between 24-Oct and 9-Nov, you may have the option to be a yajmana (subject to availability of spots). Please go here to see if anything is available.
2. Remotely from anywhere
I am pleased to let you know that you can still be a yajmana even if you are not physically present at the event. At the end of the event, we will physically post the holy ash from the yajna and prasadam to you. Keeping in mind the real value of money, this fee has been kept a bit higher if you are living out of India. That’s also so you may support the cause better. If you wish to be a yajmana, click on the appropriate link below:
India (If you pay in INR, the prasadam and holy ash will only be shipped to an Indian address).
Rest of the world (we will send the packet of prasadam and holy ash to any address outside India).
Your contributions for being a remote yajmana will go to Sadhana App.
Important! If you choose to become a remote yajmana, please give the same email address using the form above that you [will] use to login to the Sadhana app. That way, the app will know that you are a yajmana and you won’t get any pop-ups with the same option again.
Please note that being a yajmana is completely optional. The Sri Suktam sadhana remains completely free for all participants. You can do it yourself, or with me via the Sadhana app, or access the live broadcast on the live page all of which remain 100% free. Being a yajmana does not affect your ability to be a part of this divine sadhana.
Daywise Mantra and Yajna Details
Please click on the day below to see the mantra and yajna details of that particular day. Audio of all the mantras can be found on this page.
Night 1 of 16First Night
Only on the very first night, you have to take a sankalpa, vow. This is your pact with the universal energy. Simply state something along the following lines:
I, so-and-so (your name), son/daughter/disciple of so-and-so, hereby vow to perform Sri Suktam Sadhana over the next sixteen nights so I may be blessed with the grace of Mother Divine. May her companion energies and the Universe help me see it through.
You can state whatever objective you like. So, you can say something like … so I may be blessed with xyz.. abc…whatever your desired goal.
Please note that this vow is taken only on the very first day. Once done, proceed to the steps below.
Step 1
21 times chanting of the following mantra. This mantra calls upon the primordial energy of Divine Mother. (This invocation is an optional step.)
ॐ श्रीमात्रे नमः॥ oṃ śrīmātre namaḥ॥
Step 2
The mantra for the first night is given below. Ideally, this should be chanted 1000 times before you go on to do the morning yajna (fire offerings). But you can set a smaller goal of 108 times or 216 times and so on.
। oṃ āṃ hrīṃ śrīṃ klīṃ blūṃ sauṃ raṃ vaṃ śrīṃ । oṃ śrī hrīṃ śrīṃ namaḥ । hiraṇyavarṇāṃ hariṇīṃ suvarṇarajatasrajām । candrāṃ hiraṇmayīṃ lakṣmīṃ jātavedo ma āvaha ॥ namo śrīṃ hrīṃ śrīṃ oṃ । āṃ hrīṃ śrīṃ klīṃ blūṃ sauṃ raṃ vaṃ śrīṃ oṃ ।। Invoke for me, O Agni, the Goddess Lakshmi who is radiant like gold, beautiful yellow in hue, adorned with garlands of silver and gold, magnanimous like the moon and an embodiment of wealth and prosperity.
Step 3
Recite the entire Sri Suktam. I have provided it at the bottom of sixteen nights. In case you are worried about mispronouncing, you can simply listen to the audio with as much devotion and concentration as possible. The audio for the divine hymn of Sri Suktam is also provided there. The idea behind chanting the Sri Suktam is to reflect on the glories of Divine Mother so it builds more reverence in your heart and strengthens your bond with Her. The third step is optional but I recommend it highly.
In the wee hours of the morning, you are to now perform the fire offerings.

Translation
1. Invoke for me, O Agni, the Goddess Lakshmi who is radiant like gold, beautiful yellow in hue, adorned with garlands of silver and gold, magnanimous like the moon and an embodiment of wealth and prosperity.
2. O Agni! Invoke for me the Goddess who will stay by my side and bless me so I may acquire material wealth of gold, cows, horses and attendants.
3. I invoke Sri, the resplendent Mother Divine who is the Goddess of prosperity, most gloriously accompanied by her retinue of horses in the front, chariots in the middle and whose arrival is announced by the trumpeting of elephants. May she come and bless me.
4. I invoke Sri of the lustre of burnished gold, beautiful like the lotus she’s seated on, the ever smiling, benevolent, Mother Divine who is the Goddess of prosperity, an embodiment of Absolute Bliss, who is blazing with splendour. She grants the wishes of her devotees.
5. I seek refuge at the lotus feet of the Goddess who is
as beautiful and bright as the moon, who blazes with illustriousness, who is adored by the gods and exceedingly munificent. May my misfortunes end. I invoke thee.
6. O Mother Divine, resplendent as the sun! As a result of thy glories and penance have the sacred plants like bilva come into existence. May the fruits of (such penance) destroy all inauspiciousness arising out of my impure thoughts and ignorant actions.
7. With thy grace, O Mother! I’m living in a blessed country. May Kubera (the guardian lord of wealth) and Kirti (fame) come to me. May the Gods bestow upon me fame and prosperity.
8. With thy grace and my efforts, I shall ward off inauspiciousness and distressing poverty as hunger, thirst and the like. O Lakshmi! Dispel from my home every misfortune and insufficiency.
9. I invoke Sri, Mother Divine who’s the supreme controller of all beings, who can be perceived through heady fragrance, who is beyond defeat and threat, who is ever virtuous and abundant.
10. O Mother Divine, Goddess of prosperity, May we enjoy the fulfilment of our noble desires, may we be blessed with the veracity of speech, wealth and abundant foodgrains. May prosperity and fame reside in thy devotee.
11. O Kardama! Make her who was born to Kardama (i.e., to you) abide with me. Make the Goddess of Prosperity who is the mother of the universe and wears garlands of lotuses, dwell in our family.
12. Let the waters produce oily products (like butter) in my house. O Chiklita, dwell in my house and make the Goddess of Prosperity, the Divine Mother, also dwell in my family.
13. O Jataveda! Bring to me the extremely benign Lakshmi who is reddish in complexion, who dwells in lakes and who possesses the Moon’s brilliance and gold in abundance.
14. O Jataveda! Bring to me the extremely benign Lakshmi of a golden complexion who dwells in lakes, who is the bestower of plenty, who wears a garland of gold, who is resplendent like the sun and abounds in wealth.
15. O Jataveda! Bring to me that Lakshmi who will not forsake me and by whose grace I may obtain in plenty gold, cows, maids, horses and men servants.
16. He who is desirous of becoming prosperous should, after making himself pure and controlling his senses, make daily offerings of melted butter in the fire. He should also repeat always the above stanzas of mantras.
Relevant Notes and FAQs.
1. Although I’m only recommending it to the people I’ve initiated (because I’ve altered the standard method of worship and condensed it), you are welcome to do it this sadhana even if you have never been initiated, follow some other guru, or don’t follow anyone.
3. Anyone over the age of nine can do it, men, women (including menstruating women — mentioning it here in anticipation because I always get asked this question), girls, boys, old, young anyone at all.
4. Yes, you can travel if you have to as long as you can maintain your evening and morning routines.
5. A vegetarian diet is mandatory during this sadhana. Dairy is okay. Eggs, seafood, meat, no.
6. It’s best to face North, East or Northeast while doing the yajna.
7. The pots can be of any metal. Best if they are copper but any metal will do. Don’t let the material of the pots stop you from doing this sadhana. You can even use stainless steel or ceramic for all I care.
8. If you miss any day, the Sri Suktam sadhana is compromised. You will then have to wait for one year to do this sadhana. Having said that, this sadhana can also be done in the lunar month of Magha (I’ll share the details another time). The ideal time is starting with the night of Diwali and the second best is in the lunar month of Magha.
9. If you have any questions regarding the performance of this sadhana, please read my notes again.
10. Although yajna is an important part, in case you can’t do it, just chant the mantra 216 times in the morning. It’s not ideal, but let not your inability to do the yajna stop you from doing this sadhana. Either don’t do yajna at all or do it every morning for the entire duration of sixteen days. But yes, you can consider doing the yajna just on the last day if you can only manage to do it once. If you choose to do that, simply just do it like any other day.
11. If you derive joy in this sadhana, you can repeat it, if you like. This means that you finish it over sixteen days and then start another round of sixteen days and then another for as long as you like.
12. If there is any question re the sadhana that is not covered in this post, feel free to ask it in comments. I will read the comments received over the next five days and the relevant questions will be collated. Such questions will form the FAQ which will be posted as a pinned comment.
May Divine Grace enlighten your path and always keep you out of harm’s way. Let me close this long post (the longest I’ve ever written in the last twelve years on this platform), with the words of Mother Goddess (taken from Lakshmi Tantra) as she expounds the meaning of Sri Suktam to Indra.
Ever in motion, I remove all inauspiciousness [in the lives] of my devotees. Like the moon, I unceasingly delight (lit. melt) the minds of my devotees. Characterized by the vibrating happiness in the minds of the yogins, I rise and like the (rising) moon illuminate their fourth (i.e. turiya) state (of existence)…
I, the witness (Self) abiding in all beings, notice what is good and what is evil. I am Hari’s eternal majesty (lakshmi) and I am the object of all cognitive knowledge. I am ever bestowing (booms) and I direct all activities and I activate the three acts (physical, verbal, and mental). I am also identical with the knowledge manifesting itself in every individual cognition…
Like the fat that keeps a lamp burning I fuel the senses of living beings with my own sap of consciousness… O Shakra, Indra, my son, the greatest eradicator of all evil and remover of all bad luck (alakshmi), this my sukta should be recited on the occasion of any religious rite. ((ibid, as in point 1. Slightly modified.))
I hope you take up the Sri Suktam sadhana, rejoice in, and benefit from it as tremendously as I have over the years.
Peace.
Swami
Important announcement re initiations:
There are more than 900 requests for initiation sitting in my inbox. We have finished segregating them already. Please bear with me as I do justice to each one of those requests. You will hear from my office by the end of this month. Be sure to check your promotions/updates folders (if you use gmail) as emails can sometime end up there.
